Deep Lock Quarry is a wealth of history from ancient American Indian trails, pioneer quarrying, narrow gauge railroads and hobo jungles. It became a Metro Park in 1934. Within the park is Lock 28, the deepest lock at 17’ on the Ohio & Erie Canal.

Located within the National Park jurisdiction, but managed by the Summit Metro Parks, Deep Lock Quarry is named because the park contains the deepest lock on the Ohio-Erie canal. The early quarry provided rocks for the canal locks, later this sandstone was used to make millstones to remove the outer hulls of oats (i.e. Quaker Oats ).

Created after years of digging for rock, gravel and sand, North Point Quarry was ultimately filled with water from natural underground springs, rain, snow melt, and the nearby north branch of the Licking River.
For more than ninety years, this area was the heart and soul of Berea's sandstone quarries. In the early 1830s, John Baldwin discovered that the area's sandstone deposits made superb grindstones and building stones. In the 1840s, thriving sandstone quarries developed and became Berea's lifeblood.

The Kipton Quarry is a 56 acre sandstone quarry located in north central Ohio. The open pit covers over 10 acres and provides access to a variety of unique sandstone formations. The grey and buff stone mined from the quarry meet some of the most stringent quality requirements sought after by landscapers, architects, and masons.
Euclid bluestone (the Euclid Member of the Upper De- vonian Bedford Formation) is a dense, well-indurated, very fine grained sandstone that crops out in northeastern Ohio in and near Cleveland. The unit was quarried early in the nineteenth century, even earlier than documented quarry- ing of the more famous bluestones of New York State.
